The "Fairness Doctrine" in Fiction

Newsbusters reports on efforts to turn Kiefer Sutherland into an environmental crusader. Robert Bidinotto argues that the Greens will finally succeed where every fictional terrorist has failed: to kill Jack Bauer. "Folks, this demonstrates once again that you cannot win a cultural war when your enemies -- in this case, the proponents of liberal "selflessness" -- are setting the moral Rules of Engagement."

But on the other hand it also demonstrates how the grip on the public microphone has been slipping from the grasp of its former masters. Time was when things would never get this far. Now they have to mount a public campaign to gradually, imperceptibly kill a cultural icon they could never challenge directly.

Nothing follows.

Gainism (or whatever it ends up being called) will be far more than a self-destructive little cult like scientology. Scientology is like the ebola virus: it kills its victims fast and hard. Gainism is more like the common cold.

As a result I think it's a fair bet that we're alive for the birth of the first truly secular religion (which may or may not prove a good thing in the long run, but in all likelihood will destroy it's host culture utterly, just as every major religion has historically done.)

"Through the L.A. Department of Water and Power, the show will purchase all of its energy from renewable power sources (such as wind, water and solar). As a result, this "green energy" will be brought into the Los Angeles power grid from outlying areas, thereby reducing overall emissions and pollution in greater Los Angeles."

What utter BS. Unless they funded new 'green' generation capacity. Electricity is fungible. Its all pooled on the grid. Saying *our* power came from these particular green sources is nonsense, and other people's power came from those nasty ones, is fiction.

I've tended to be a bit disappointed with 24 because, although they are the only ones willing to openly have Islamist badguys, they susually skew it so somehow the *real* baddies are white guys in suits, the traitors and opportunists instead of the poeple who *actually* want to nuke/gas/etc us.
