Grumpy Old Men
Two passengers helped subdue a passenger who was frightening Northwest Flight 720. "Hayden, a 65-year-old former police commander, had enlisted a gray-haired gentleman sitting next to him to assist. The man turned out to be a former US Marine. "I had looked around the plane for help, and all the younger guys had averted their eyes. When I asked the guy next to me if he was up to it, all he said was, 'Retired captain. USMC.' I said, 'You'll do.'"
Sometimes it's not the years, it's the mileage.

My favorite part comes from the wife:
"The woman sitting in front of us was very upset and asked me how I could just sit there reading," Katie Hayden said. "Bob's been shot at. He's been stabbed. He's taken knives away. He knows how to handle those situations. I figured he would go up there and step on somebody's neck, and that would be the end of it. I knew how that situation would end. I didn't know how the book would end."
I don't think we make them like that anymore.
Finding those who do what they have to do might be hard in the Northeast corridor of America - but in most other parts of America there are still men to be found.
Aristides, I like that lady and I know how the book ends too.
Boghie, You nailed it! Down here in Dixie there is a higher concentration of real men, same with NW and SW.
The wussification of American will take time to reverse but I am optimistic.
Salaam eleikum.
Well thats shameful but not surprising Wretchard.
The younger men all averted their eyes. Just as the younger men left their female classmates and elderly professors to die at the hands of Cho at Virginia Tech.
This is the feminization of America. It's what happens when you impose female values at all costs, and stigmatize blue collar labor and other formerly significant values (protecting others, wife, family, etc) as being an icky indicator of low status no desirable woman would want anything to do with.
A nation of Sex and the City women ends up with a nation of feminized men useless for anything but red-carpet Arm Candy. Certainly not useful for stopping a hijacking.
At least some Americans are willing to take the fight to the Bad Guys. In a whole boat load of British sailors the whole damned bunch of them averted their eyes, and gave themselves up. I keep seeing that planes are being hijacked in Turkey and India and other timid countries around the world. I cannot imagine ANY American plane ever being hijacked again -- even if the younger men did initially avert their eyes. The stewardesses were at least in there fighting, too.
What do you expect from a generation who got trophies for showing up and doing nothing.
