The Dark Night

It has been said that the dark night of fascism is always about to descend on America, but somehow descends somewhere else. Europe's new counterterrorism treaty without fanfare "completely changes the rules," according to the Counterterrorism Blog. "It expands coverage beyond actual 'terrorist acts' to 'offenses which may lead to acts of terrorism,'" including training, recruit or incitement to a terrorist act. Several European countries have yet to ratify the convention.

The preamble of the new convention states clearly, in a way the UN has still been unable to do, “that terrorist offences and the offences set forth in this Convention, by whoever perpetrated, are under no circumstances justifiable by considerations of a political, philosophical, ideological, racial, ethnic, religious or other similar nature.”

Seven signatories. Denmark, plus six countries from what used to be the soviet block including Russia itself. The old soviet block countries aren't so squeamish, and I can see why Denmark is fed up.

But that's all. No Holland. No France. At least, not yet.

The treaty criminalizes " . . . 'offenses which may lead to acts of terrorism"

Well, clearly, in typical post-modern fashion, this provision will only be invoked to supress anything considered 'islamophobic' -- which understandably, of course, may "lead to acts of terrorism" -- much the way that report on anti-Semitic violence in France was supressed because its identification of the perpetrators would have 'provoked' animosity toward muslims.
