Collapse of Europe? Conference

Readers who are interested in the subject of Europe's Future and who may want to do a little personal networking besides may want to attend the Collapse of Europe? Conference to be held from June 10-11 at Pepperdine University in Malibu. The speakers are Mark Steyn, Greg Davis, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Ibn Warraq, Philippe Karsenty so it's likely to be lively.

Roger Kimball, Eric Ormsby, Anthony Daniels, Robert Bork, and Mark Steyn at CUNY recently were pretty darn dynamic. Well, Mr. Honorable Justice Bork was a bit less scintillating than the others. I highly recommend any panel that includes those speakers. There aren't many folks that can keep me and my brother glued to the TV as they managed without lots of snappy one-liners and scantily-clad dancing girls.

Ooops. I guess I shouldn'ta let *that* one slip out...

Saw an item on Fox News Channel about Czech attitudes toward the stationing of U.S. missile defenses in their country, which involves 150 U.S. military personnel being stationed there. The leadership there is much in favor of it. But a survey showed that 61% of the people did not like the idea of U.S. troops in their country. And the same survey showed that 57% of the people did want to be protected against attack by missiles and other terrorist threats. Those results probably show much of what is wrong with Europe – and note that we are talking about “new” Europe here.

But I think what has gotten Putin so P.O.ed is that the U.S. anti-missile radar and our troops would be based in an abandoned former Soviet military base. It has empty barracks and some very solid bunkers. Having a former key Warsaw Pact member in NATO is probably galling enough to the Russians but having U.S. troops at a base from which they retreated in disgrace is probably too much.

Seems shame/honour culture is not just an Arab thing.

Don't be down on him, he could always grow up.
