Technology as Mephistopheles

Chester interviews Dr. Fred Ikle, an Undersecretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan and arms control expert on his book Annihilation from Within. "We are preoccupied with suicide bombers, jihadist terrorists, and rogue nations producing nuclear weapons, but these menaces are merely distant thunder that foretells the gathering storm. It is the dark side of technological progress that explains this emerging crisis." This is a five star quality interview. In terms of its range, naturalness and surprising discovery you will not find a better discussion anywhere. Wait for the part when Chester asks about Ikle's idea of how increasing life expectancy changes the tone of society because it reflects the changing emotional seasons of the aging, and ask yourself if discussions ever get any better than this.

Increasing life expectancy would actually make things worse. None of these medical benefits would trickle down to the Arab poor, so it would double the terror value of a 19 year old strapping on dynamite and running into a hotel lobby. And the Western men who would put their lives on the line to stop the suiciders would need to be twice as brave.

If you hear this man speak you sense his honest sincerity. And even though he does not sound like a particularly religious person his observations are chillingly reminiscent of some verses from the Bible copied below.

Notice that God's Holy Spirit is restraining the madness and God actually has to shorten the days or no one would survive what some mad men are clearly plotting.

I'm grateful for this "inside" perspective because the events today could be disquieting to say the least.

Mark: 13:20
20 "Unless the Lord had shortened those days, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days.

Second Thessalonians 2:3-12.
Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God. Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I was telling you these things? And you know what restrains him now, so that in his time he will be revealed. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only HE who now restrains will do so until HE is taken out of the way. Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming; that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false, in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness.

Hmmmm:

Dr. Jack Wheeler is advocating a conservative push to dump Gates as SecDef nominee (ala Harriet Miers ouster) in favor of Rick Santorum (who could use the job).
