Andrew Olmstead

Blogger Andrew Olmstead has been killed in Diyala. Blackfive adds "I just found out that, yesterday, Andrew Olmsted's unit was ambushed. Andrew was killed."

Nothing follows.

Major Olmstead specifically requested that his death not be politicized. His life will speak for itself.

hilzoy (?) noted that most commenters were respecting the Major's request - from what I read, the posters were expressing their grief.

It's the one that brings it home. Any statistical argument about the decline in deaths in Iraq will be true but beside the point.

Because we read Olmstead, we knew him, if ever so slightly. He was unique, as all of us are unique. There will never, in the wide spaces of time, ever be another Andrew Olmstead. What he did, he did.

And how we respond will define us. Not all tears are evil.

Major Olmstead represents the flawed but perfect example of the greatness of the true american person

I shall, no matter the cause of his death, remember him for dying to protect the innocent women and children.

he was a man...
