The Fundamentals of Faith
The Times Online describes a momentary misunderstanding.
The children of Che Guevara, the revolutionary pin-up, had been invited to Tehran University to commemorate the 40th anniversary of their father’s death and celebrate the growing solidarity between “the left and revolutionary Islam” at a conference partly paid for by Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president.
But then one of the speakers, Hajj Saeed Qassemi, the co-ordinator of the Association of Volunteers for Suicide-Martyrdom (who presumably remains selflessly alive for the cause), revealed that Che was a “truly religious man who believed in God and hated communism and the Soviet Union”.
Che’s daughter Aleida wondered if something might have been lost in translation. “My father never mentioned God,” she said, to the consternation of the audience. “He never met God.” During the commotion, Aleida and her brother were led swiftly out of the hall and escorted back to their hotel. “By the end of the day, the two Guevaras had become non-persons. The state-controlled media suddenly forgot their existence,” the Iranian writer Amir Taheri noted.
After their departure, Qassemi went on to claim that Fidel Castro, the “supreme guide” of Guevara, was also a man of God. “The Soviet Union is gone,” he affirmed. “The leadership of the downtrodden has passed to our Islamic republic. Those who wish to destroy America must understand the reality and not be clever with words.”
The deluded Guevara children are mistaken. Qassemi is correct. The sole remaining basis of Marxism from this point forward is no longer Dialectical Materialism. Not the Labor Theory of Value. Nor the principle of the Dictatorship of the Proletariat. In fact nobody knows what any of these things means any longer except for some old codgers leafing through tattered volumes at the Revolution Bookstore. They are unimportant now. Nobody believes them any more. Nothing is important any longer but revenge -- vengeance for showing up all the lies in the 100 odd years in which Marxism tried to rule the world. Vengeance for the ridicule showered on all Marxism's fevered dreams. Vengeance for unmasking the Worker's Paradise as nothing but the Year Zero with a press release. Vengeance on America however long, and under whatever guise. Allah Akbar!

One religion of death exchanged for another religion of death. Fitting.
The Left and Islam are yin and yang. The Left glorifies sexual deviancy and punishes male aggression, and Islam suppresses sexuality and glorifies aggression.
A pair made in Utopia.
Peter -- I'd argue that the Left and Islam are the same. The Left wishes to have a few powerful men with essentially, harems. Look at how many women, particularly or especially feminists, wanted to sleep with Bill Clinton.
Both Islam and the Left allow the powerful men to do whatever they want, particularly in matters of sex. Arafat or Roman Polanski or Woody Allen come to mind.
Meanwhile the existential threat to the Left AND Islam is the ability of ordinary men to form families of their own, with wives of their own not subject to the whims of powerful men.
A Gavin Newsome or Tony Villaraigosa is pretty much the same as a Fidel or an Osama or Zawahari.
Peter, That's some deep insight.
Ideologues don't have to examine the inherent contradictions of the grand schemes they live and kill for. In reality they're all souless nihilists fueled by envy and self importance.Screw 'em.
Alison:
Screw 'em? Nah -- kill 'em. Kill 'em all and let God sort out the details.
As for the Guevera children being made non-persons all I can say is "not a moment too soon." Hugo Chavez should be made a non-person too, but he and Ahmadinejad seem to have struck it off pretty well recently. Well my prescription works for them, too: "kill 'em and let God sort them out."

The Watermellon Principle: Red on the Inside. Green on the outside.
Green--as in Environmentalist wackos, or Green as in Islam. Sometimes both, depending on the needs of the moment.
Hey commie, who is your daddy?
Ironic, with Karl Marx's opium of the masses comment and belief now. Commies could not stand up to a robust capitalism and now are knuckling under to Islamism.
Atheist socialists like Castro & THugo Chavez are just spitlickles to Islam ;-).
I remember back in the days of the newsgroups, Roger David Carasso created a newsgroup called "alt.wanted.moslem.gay". It lasted less than two weeks, but man oh man, was it ever interesting. Gay rights activists, Islamists, liberals, oh my! If I remember correctly, a commenter there compared the flame wars on that short-lived newsgroup to the proverbial crossposting between rec.pets.cats and alt.sex.bestiality.
The main reason the Left and the Islamists don't hate each other is because they know almost nothing about each other. Each is dedicated to defeating an enemy, and they can agree on who and what that enemy is. Yet, any alliance between them is destined to go sour once they get to know each other. Any sincere leftist who honestly understands the Islamists would prefer George W. Bush to Osama bin Laden in a heartbeat. Any desire by men like Castro and Chavez to ally with an Islamist shows that the Left was always a flag of convenience for them; spite and power have more meaning for them than ideology.
Sounds like the children of Che might be Christians. "He never met God". That's his daughter talking. God bless her lack of guile. She spoke right up to power. Truth to power. How refreshing.
There is also a degree of denial on the Left, or other self-delusion towards the Islamists. That the Islamists won't turn on them when they are no longer "useful fools", or even that they can "guide" the Islamists.
The Islamists, on the other hand, see the Left accurately enough, tools to be used and then discarded.
Che must be rolling over in the flames to have his name in the same sentence with "God"...
...and who knows, maybe Castro is too, by now.
Oh yes: both men of God. No wonder religion is in trouble.
Wonder if they got a tee shirt?
A stark Che image on a background of green? Would such an image be blasphemy, or just good marketing?
SO is it Mullah Che or Che Khan? Crazy thing is Ayatollah Khomeini's revolution was into big time killing of Communists while en route to the Shah's palace. A different time, a different account of history.
