I found this photograph at photojournalist Jim MacMillan's excellent site which gives a sense of what riding shotgun can mean when it involves leaning out of doors in helicopters flying over Baghdad. The photographs on his site are definitely worth a look.

The guys hanging out of the chopper, are they Blackwater?
Great image! No blur or whir, just a frozen, soundless microsecond in the lives of those brave men. Machine and men look like an infernal snowflake, dark and descended from war clouds somewhere in a sunny sky.
May they chill the bad guys with lots of kill shots.
