Defense Industry Daily reports Germany has published its first defense policy review in 12 years. The German Defense Ministry says NATO deployment requirements have forced a transformation. Transformation, according to Spacewar, doesn't adequately describe it. "The governing coalition of Social Democrats and Alliance 90/Greens, despite its anti-military track record, has extended the Budeswehr's arm as far as the Balkans, Africa and Afghanistan."
Commentary
My grandfather used to serenade me to sleep as a child. I vaguely remember the Spanish guitar and the moon shining through the window as he leaned back on the wall and played what he could play. He didn't know any proper lullabys but had an extensive repertoire of Spanish and Mexican popular songs. One particular song had a phrase which went, in Spanish, "your eyes say yes, but your lips say no: which shall I believe?". It was great stuff for a four year old.
So when looking at Germany and Europe as a whole and in trying to understand what they really think about the threats facing them in the 21st century the words come back: "Your eyes say yes, but your lips say no: which shall I believe?".

The Germans think they are over-extended. During the 1960-70 period the US had 550,000 American troops in Germany.
The number of prostitutes in Germany is 500,000. Perhaps they are over-extended as well, but clearly the Germans would rather make love than war. That is not all bad.
Maybe it is a good thing that the Krauts feel they've reached the limit when 10% of their small Army (by German standards) is deployed overseas given their track record in the 20th Century.
